Who we are

I am Seán Byrne, who solely runs this blog as a personal hobby. This website runs on WordPress with the Jetpack add-on and is hosted on Blacknight.  My website address is: https://editorsean.com.

What personal data we collect and why we collect it

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymised string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Media

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

Contact forms

Any data sent through this website’s contact form will be sent along with the visitor’s IP address to my e-mail account in much the same way as sending me an e-mail.

Cookies

If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracing your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognise and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Where we send your data

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.

Your contact information

If you leave a comment or provide an e-mail address in the ‘Follow Me’ field, this website maintains your e-mail address in its database. Should you tick the ‘Notify me of follow-up comments’ when leaving a comment, you will receive an e-mail whenever anyone replies to your comment. If fill the ‘Follow me’ field or tick the ‘notify me of new posts’ option when leaving a comment, this website will notify you each time I post a new article.

Each e-mail provides an unsubscribe link.  You can also contact me through this website’s contact form to remove all your contact information.  If you have trouble answering the trivia captcha (there to discourage spam), the answers are one of the following: light, paper, kettle and mouse.

Additional information

How we protect your data

If a comment left on the website contains any personal information other than a name or avatar, I will edit out that personal information before making the comment live.  For example, I will edit out any personal address, telephone number, etc.  I may also choose to reply to the e-mail address provided instead of making the comment live.

This website uses https (Let’s Encrypt cert), which encrypts any data submitted in a form.  I use the Wordfence plug-in, which is effectively a firewall and malware/security scanner for the website.  This notifies me any time a plug-in requires updating or should any core file be tampered with.

What data breach procedures we have in place

I periodically make a complete backup of the website including its database.  If for any reason there is a data breach, I will alert you of such a breach and take the website offline until it is secured. This will include restoring a known good backup before the breach took place.

What third parties we receive data from

We do not receive personal data from third parties.  All data on this website has been voluntarily added such as through the contact and comment forms.
